While running the Boston Marathon in 2014, I violated the golden rule of racing: Don't Try Anything New on Race Day. Boy, am I glad I did! At the marathon expo I had a lengthy conversation with a representative of Generation Ucan. Because all runners, or maybe just me, tend to overshare details of the issues they experience while running, we had a thorough discussion of my past stomach problems, and he shared with me the benefits of UCAN, especially how runners with even the most sensitive of stomachs were having great results with UCAN, and something else that really appealed to me - the slow release of energy from UCAN's SuperStarch meant less fuel was needed to maintain energy levels, and it prevented the blood sugar spikes that can be brought on by other fueling products. I left the UCAN booth with some samples of UCAN SuperStarch and nothing to lose.
The next day I took one packet of UCAN mixed with water about 45 minutes prior to the start of the Boston Marathon. I was really surprised at how much energy I felt throughout the whole race, and even better, no stomach problems. I used two gels during the marathon instead of my usual four. From that day forward, I was hooked.
I consume a packet of UCAN SuperStarch prior to my long runs or hard workouts, and mix the protein recovery powder into my post workout smoothie. UCAN recently debuted a line of snack bars and a hydration powder that can be mixed with water. I have found eating half of a bar has the same results for me as drinking a serving of the powder. Consuming UCAN thirty minutes prior to my long runs means I don't have to mess with gels during my run, which means no more stomach issues!
My marathon fueling strategy is a bit different than my fueling plan for long runs. I have carried a bottle of UCAN SuperStarch during marathons with great success, but I really don't like to carry anything while I'm working hard. My friend, Elizabeth Clor, has created a how to video for making UCAN SuperStarch into a gel you can carry with you, just like a gel packet. I plan to use this strategy for the Boston Marathon in April. You can watch the video here. Elizabeth is a very talented runner and writer - check out her blog at www.elizabethclor.com.
In April of this past year I jumped at the chance to become a Generation UCAN brand ambassador. Please contact me if you have any questions about their product lineup, or if you'd like a 10% discount on your purchase!
